Weekly Meetings

Map/Directions   |   Parking/Transit Info   |   Meeting Schedule

Ackerman Union Map, East of Bruin Bear, Center of CampusAll Enigma meetings in Ackerman Union and Kerckhoff Hall are open to the public. Both members and non-members are invited to attend our events, free of charge. Students, staff, faculty, and local community members are welcome.

Enigma meetings are held every Monday at 8:00 pm, and run until 11:00 pm, or until people leave. Please note: Locations and activities are subject to change -- last minute changes to locations or activities will be announced on the Enigma listserv.

All meetings include three parts: Announcements (general business plus any news of interest), Chaos (basically a short break to get drinks or ice cream from the Kerckhoff Coffee House), and the night's official Activity. (See below for a list of some of Enigma's past activities.) Check the meeting description to see if food/drink will be served.

Gamers who wish to game during non-gaming nights can retreat to the upstairs lounge if there is insufficient space left in the regular meeting room.

Winter Quarter 2005 we will be in one of two rooms: Ackerman Union 2408 (2nd floor), or Ackerman Union 3517 (3rd floor). Both are located in the Ackerman Student Union, at the center of the UCLA campus.

Metered parking ($0.25 per 8 min) is available on campus at Lot 6, which is adjacent to the bus turnaround next to Ackerman, and in a few select spots in Lot 4, which is underneath Wooden Center. LA City metered ($.25 per 30 min) and private paid lot parking is also available off campus in Westwood. There is also bus service on Santa Monica Blue Bus lines #12, #8, #1, #2, and #3, as well as Culver City Bus line #3. For more transit information, visit the UCLA Orientation page. For Enigmans who live farther away, check with the main list for carpools.

If you are walking on campus or the surrounding area late at night, you can request a free UCLA campus escort by calling 310-794-9255 (794-WALK), or dial 49255 (4-WALK) from any campus phone.

See Upcoming Events for Enigma events which occur outside of the weekly meetings.

Oct 10th [week 2] Ackerman 2408 Uncle Rizzy's Game Seminars: The First Game Session.

Hosted by Graydon Schlichter, and Rizwan Kassim.
An intro to RPGs and roleplaying, lead by master storyteller and actor, Graydon Schlichter. Whether you're a seasoned roleplayer, or simply would like to know what RPGs are, there's something at this seminar for you! Covers material for LARPs (Live Action Role Playing), Dungeons and Dragons, Call of Cthulhu, and others. Interspersed within this session will be mini roleplaying games, and other exercises

For those starting games this quarter through Enigma, this is a great way to prepare, and to meet other gamers. Contact rizwank (at) geekymedia [dot] com for more info.
Oct 17th [week 3] Ackerman 2408 Grand Nuke War Tournament (& other games)

Aaron Vanek
How much fun is Nuclear War?
Much fun!
But only if it's the fast-paced card game by Flying Buffalo!

Nuclear War (created in 1965) is one of the first, and best, "beer and pizza" games, and multiple winner of a "Best of All Time" game awards.

On Monday, October 17, Enigma celebrates the 40th Anniversary of this darkly humorous game with the GRAND NUKE WAR tournament!

Music! Food! Prizes! Bombs!

No experience necessary!
Oct 24th [week 4] Ackerman 2408 Saul's Self-Defense (Offense) Seminar

Saul Wyner
Enigma's illustrious president, Saul Wyner, an accomplished lifelong martial artist (and LAUSD's biggest bastard) will give a little instruction as of to super basic self-defense techniques from Th3 StR33t (yeah, boooi!). While most Enigma members may only have experience in the martial arts as a function of Tekken, Saul will hopefully give a nice introduction into the world of unarmed/armed combat.

The seminar will consist of basic introduction, basic instruction in fighting principles, a comprehensive introduction to legal improvised weapons (from the archetypal roll of quarters to the Mini Mag-lite, to the cue ball and jimmy stick!). There will also be d20 damage ratings given for each improvised weapon, as well as some suggested homebrew weapon Feats. Be there!
Oct 31st [week 5] Ackerman 2408 Zombie Survival Night (& games afterwards)

TC Lai
A short session on how to plan, prepare, and survive attacks from zombies. Based in part on the recently published The Zombie Survival Guide, this seminar provides a guide on what to do before an attack to prepare, and what to do during an attack to maximize your chances of surviving.

Topics include: zombies types and infection hazards, choosing/improvising weapons, finding and creating safe zones in the event of an attack, areas to avoid during an attack, and other special tactical considerations for those living in the Los Angeles area. Remember, just because they're undead, doesn't mean you have to join them!

Extra points for coming in costume...(Note: This event replaces the Zombie Survival Night Live Game.)
Nov 7th [week 6] Ackerman 2408 Cooperative Board Gaming Night (& other games)

Rizwan Kassim
Would you rather cooperate with your friends than undercut them? Are you tired of world domination games and board games where you have to kick ass, or have your ass kicked? Want to play a game where you can actually win? Then come sixth week and play some Cooperative Board Games with us.

This relatively new genre of board game has you trying to beat the game, rather than your friends.

Games include:
"Shadows over Camelot" (3-7 players), where you play knights of the round table, defending Camelot against enemies from without, and possibly within?
"Arkham Horror" (1-8 players), based on the H.P. Lovecraft stories and the Cthulhu RPGs, play as one of several investigators, racing against time and the forces of darkness, to prevent an evil from awakening and destroying the world.
"Lord of the Rings" (2-5 players), take the role of one of 5 hobbits, including one ring-bearer, and journey through 4 boards to reach Mount Doom. But beware of Sauron and the ring!

Decompress after your midterms! Join us to fight for a common cause, instead of fighting each other!
Nov 14th [week 7] Ackerman 2408 Harry Potter Book Discussion

Faith Cheltenham
An event to prepare for the opening of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire on Friday, Nov 18th
Nov 21st [week 8] TBA Catan Night (& other games)

Scott Martin
Come play Settlers of Catan, the game that's revolutionized modern board-gaming!

We'll be running several games, including original Settlers of Catan (for those new to the rules), the Seafarers of Catan and Cities and Knights of Catan expansions (for those who want something more advanced), and maybe even Starfarers of Catan (a whole separate game for those who would rather fly spaceships than build roads). Catan for everyone!
Nov 28th [week 9] Start Point: Ackerman 2408 Campus Rally
Race across the UCLA Campus!

Nick Ingwersen
"Enigma needs YOU! The Secret Masters of Fandom are up to their diabolical plans to destroy Enigma yet again. You and your team will follow cryptic instructions to discover clues and foil their evil plot. If your team does the best job, you'll win a fabulous* prize!

*Degree of fabulousness may vary."

This is one of Enigma's best activities. Wear comfortable shoes, and bring a flashlight if you have one. Nick will be standing guard over your stuff at basecamp, as individual teams race across campus to see who will be the first to decipher the instructions, and complete their mission. Lots of fun, and a great bonding experience - getting lost together!
Dec 5th [week 10] Ackerman 2408 Video Games Night & TournamentTBA
Dec 12th [FINALS] N/A No MeetingGood Luck on Finals!
Dec 19st [intersession] TBD TBATBA
Dec 26th [intersession] N/A No Meeting

Enigma is always looking for different activities with which to fill its meetings. (Surprise! Science fiction fans are into new things!) Some examples of common activities: guest speakers (past speakers have included David Brin, Greg Benford, Sheila Finch, Emma Bull, Will Shetterly, Tim Powers, Len Wien, Berni Wrightson, Terry Rossio, and many other writers, artists, and Hollywood professionals), book discussions, video viewings, group story-writing, costuming workshops, world-building (on paper only), Science Fictionary (pictionary with an sf theme), Clay-o-Rama (table-top battles between play-do creatures created on the spot), boffer massacres (grown people hitting each other over the head with padded sticks), film shoots, and any other random activity we can come up with. We're always looking for new and crazy things to do, so feel free to suggest ideas.
