What is Enigma?

Enigma (which is celebrating it's 20th year at UCLA) exists for members of the UCLA community interested in shared themes of speculative fiction (encompassing horror, fantasy, sci-fi/SciFi), future science, roleplaying games, and simulation games in all their varied media and forms. Enigma encompasses undergraduate and graduate UCLA students living both on and off-campus, UCLA staff, and members from the community in which UCLA serves.

Enigma provides a forum for discussion, exploration, and social activities; brings professional writers, scientists, designers, and artists to meet with members; and encourages and assists members in expressing themselves through the creative aspects of science fiction, fantasy, horror, and gaming, and supports them if they choose to pursue related fields in science, game design, cinema, writing, and acting, among others.

Enigma publishes a quarterly arts and literary journal (Enigmata), puts on a yearly convention (Enigmacon), and runs events both on and off campus. Enigma has also sponsored performance groups, video/film projects, collaborative works of fiction, and invited distinguished guests and celebrities to share their experiences with members and the public. Enigma also maintains a library of member-donated books and videos (over 1000 items at present), which it makes available to members for no charge. Enigma also provides personal growth and leadership opportunities to students through both the day-to-day administrative running of the organizing of public events.
